Examining HBO Max’s Incredible New ‘Titans’ Marketing Strategy

Lately, Warner Bros has been marketing their Titans series in a different way, and we are big fans of it.

Titans Marketing

As most have likely realized by now, Titans is not perfect. Fans have had a lot to complain about when it comes to Titans, and some of these complaints are regarding the marketing of the series. Titans (and DC Universe in general) has never been the best at marketing itself. The social media accounts of the series have always been dead silent in-between the airing of seasons, and even when the show was releasing new episodes, most of the marketing would just be a poster of a character. Sometimes, if the graphic designer was feeling fancy, the character poster would include a random line from the episode it was supposed to be advertising! Outside of that, we would get the occasional season trailer on YouTube or a “Watch Titans Now on DC Universe!” banner on Facebook. It’s clear that Netflix’s season 1 marketing campaign is the reason why this show has become so popular, and I personally believe that the marketing of Titans has been holding it back massively.

Cryptic Teases?

Which is why it was so surprising when the Titans Twitter and Instagram accounts randomly posted a cryptic video and a date! Back on the 25th of October when the Red Hood tease was dropped on social media, I was worried. Don’t get me wrong, the cryptic tease was great and I was really excited about it, but I was worried that this would have been a one-time type situation. I was also worried about the fact that, if that was the case, they would be wasting it on Red Hood instead of teasing the new costumes of Starfire and Blackfire, who are the characters that season 3 is centered around. Fortunately, that is not the case. Just earlier today on the 21st of November, the Titans social media accounts dropped a new teaser. According to the mysterious tweet and Instagram post, we will be seeing Starfire’s new costume on the 23rd of November! It’s worth noting that I previously revealed that Kory would be getting a new costume. I also noted that she will actually be wearing several different costumes throughout the season!

Will We Be Getting More Costume Reveal Teases?

Furthermore, I have learned that these teases will not end with Starfire! Titans is planning to do more costume reveals like these, leading up to the first trailer of season 3. Characters that you can potentially expect costume reveals of are:

  • Nightwing. He will be getting an upgraded version of his previous suit as revealed in this article of The Vulcan Reporter.
  • Beast Boy. Gar will also be getting a new superhero costume, as per this article of mine.
  • Possibly Rachel, who is theorized to get a new superhero suit in the upcoming third season.
  • Possibly Conner. Recently, a crew member on Titans posted a picture to their social media featuring Dick Grayson in his Nightwing suit, but also Conner in a new costume. The picture was clearly a fan-edit, though the crew member could be teasing something…
  • Bruce Wayne? I think it’s time we see the dark knight in action.

Titans hails from showrunner Greg Walker and producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, and Greg Berlanti. The current cast consists of Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Curran Walters, Conor Leslie, Minka Kelly, Alan Ritchson, Chelsea Zhang, and Joshua Orpin. Production on the third season began on October 14, 2020, in Toronto and will wrap up next June. Episodes 1, 3, and 4 have finished production, with episode 2 currently being filmed. No premiere date has been set.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Titans are now available to be watched on HBO Max in the United States and Netflix internationally.
