‘Foundation’ Lands Early Season 2 Renewal at Apple TV+

Apple has decided to renew Foundation for a second season, ahead of its Season 1 premiere.

Apple’s Foundation is an upcoming sci-fi series based on the book series of the same name by Isaac Asimov. Foundation is created by David S. Goyer for the Apple TV+ streaming service.  The series chronicles the thousand-year saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it. The cast consists of; Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, Terrence Mann, and Alfred Enoch. Goyer, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross, and Robyn Asimov will be executive producing.

It was announced back in 2019 that co-creator Josh Friedman had exited the series, leaving Goyer as the sole showrunner. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Friedman’s decision to leave Foundation was amicable. The plan had always been for one of the two creators to remain the boots-on-the-ground showrunner on the series. Even though Friedman exited out of his co-creator position, he will remain involved as an executive producer. Goyer will now become the lone showrunner while also contributing scripts and overseeing the writers’ room.

In an interview with Lovin Malta, Goyer stated that he would like to produce eighty episodes of Foundation. You can read his statement below:

…with Foundation we can tell the story, hopefully, over the course of eighty episodes; eighty hours, as opposed to trying to condense it all into two or three hours for a single film.

On March 12, 2020, Apple suspended production of the show in Ireland due to COVID-19, with filming having been resumed on October 6, On January 27, 2021, Goyer announced that after quarantining and receiving special waivers from the government of Malta, cast and crew members were allowed to start filming on the island. Goyer noted that filming was always planned to be conducted in Malta; however, due to new restrictions imposed in London, they will move significant portions of production to Malta.

According to news outlet FilmNewEurope, The first season of Apple TV+’s Foundation finished filming in Malta on the 17th of February, 2021. Season 2 of the sci-fi series is currently in pre-production, with production planned to begin shortly. It looks like the plan is to film both seasons back-to-back, though a second season was never officially announced.

Foundation Season 1 consists of ten episodes and is due to be released in Fall 2021.
