A Shadow and Bone spinoff series is in development at Netflix, centered around the Six of Crows characters featured in the series. These characters include; Kaz Brekker, Inej Ghafa, Matthias Helvar, Nina Zenik, and Jesper Fahey.
It is currently unclear when we can expect the series to start production, though we have learned that this spinoff will be developed by Shadow and Bone showrunner Eric Heisserer.
Shadow and Bone is a fantasy show developed by Eric Heisserer and 21 Laps Entertainment for Netflix. It is based on the Grisha trilogy (beginning with Shadow and Bone) and the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo.
Shadow and Bone finds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive.
The main cast can be split into two groups, defined by which novels the characters are adapted from. The Shadow and Bone cast consists of; Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov, Ben Barnes as General Kirigan/The Darkling, and Archie Renaux as Malyen Oretsev. The Six of Crows cast includes; Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, and Kit Young as Jesper Fahey. A third subplot includes Danielle Galligan’s Nina Zenik and Calahan Skogman’s Matthias as they spend most of their screentime together, isolated from the rest of the main cast. These characters are also members of the Six of Crows team in the source material.
Eric Heisserer, Shawn Levy, Pouya Shahbazian, Leigh Bardugo, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen, and Josh Barry serve as executive producers on Shadow and Bone.
Previously, it was revealed by me over at What’s On Netflix that Shadow and Bone had received an early season 2 renewal. I later stated that this would be confirmed on the first day of Netflix’s Geeked Event, which it was.
