Cinematographer Gavin Struthers has joined The CW’s Superman & Lois series as the director of photography.
Struthers has worked as a cinematographer on shows like Shameless, The Alienist, Nightflyers, Black Sails, The Witcher, and more.
Superman & Lois is developed by Todd Helbing and Greg Berlanti, based on the DC Comics characters Superman and Lois Lane, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch star as the titular characters Clark Kent / Superman, a costumed superhero, and Lois Lane, a journalist for the Daily Planet. The series will be set in the Arrowverse, sharing continuity with the other television series of the franchise.
The rest of the cast includes Jordan Elsass, Alexander Garfin, Dylan Walsh, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Erik Valdez, Wolé Parks, and Inde Navarrette. Donald Munro is set to produce the series, with Greg Berlanti, Todd Helbing, Geoff Johns, and Sarah Schechter executive producing. The pilot is being directed by Lee Toland Krieger.
From what I understand, Krieger plans to go for an “indie film” vibe with the series. The cinematography of the series has also been described to me as “Friday Night Lights inspired.” The show is supposed to be a more grounded take on the Superman mythos. Well, as grounded as you can make a story about Superman, at least.
The GWW has been able to obtain the first five episodes titles of Superman & Lois season 1. You can view them below:
- The Perks of Not being a Wallflower
- The Beacon
Meanwhile, production on the pilot was expected to begin on March 23, 2020, in Vancouver, Canada, and conclude on May 14. However, plans to shoot the pilot were scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming eventually began on October 21, 2020 and is scheduled to conclude on May 1, 2021. Superman & Lois is scheduled to premiere on February 23, 2021.
