Last month, Nickelodeon announced their plans to expand the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender with the establishment of Avatar Studios. The newly formed content division of Nickelodeon was created to develop original animated projects based on the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise. During the announcement of Avatar Studios, it was also stated that its first project will be a theatrical animated film.
In an interview with Deadline, network president Brian Robbins revealed some more details about upcoming Avatar Studios projects. Robbins revealed that an entire The Last Airbender universe is in the works at Nickelodeon. Furthermore, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are helming the content division as chief creative officers. There is a theatrical film in the works, with multiple animated projects, television series, and films being planned.
You can view Robbins’ original statement below:
We are in the early stages of developing and exploring what we are calling an entire Avatar Airbender universe. Mike and Bryan are hard at work, and I think that universe will encompass definitely a theatrical film, animation, certainly multiple TV series, and probably multiple films. I think we will be ready very soon to tell the world what is coming first but we are not there yet because we’re in early stages of creative development.
The new projects will be joining the two already existing animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. Netflix is also working on a live-action series based on The Last Airbender series. This will be the first time the animated series has ever been adapted in live-action. The original creators of the franchise (Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko) will not be involved with the live-action project.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is an animated television series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It aired on Nickelodeon for three seasons, from February 2005 to July 2008. In a war-torn world of elemental magic, a young boy reawakens to undertake a dangerous mystic quest to fulfill his destiny as the Avatar, and bring peace to the world by defeating the Fire Nation.
The Legend of Korra is an animated television series created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino for Nickelodeon. The Legend of Korra is a sequel to The Last Airbender, which aired from 2005 to 2008. The series ran for 52 episodes (chapters), separated into four seasons (“books”), from April 14, 2012 to December 19, 2014. It has been continued as a comics series that mostly takes place in the fictional city of Republic City.
Avatar Studios’ first project, an animated theatrical film, will begin production later this year. Konietzko and DiMartino will serve as executive producers on the film.
