It’s official: Hannibal and Doctor Strange actor Mads Mikkelsen will be playing Gellert Grindelwald in WB’s upcoming ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ film.
Earlier this month, Deadline reported that Mikkelsen was in talks to play Grindelwald, replacing Johnny Depp in the role. According to Deadline, Mikkelsen was chosen by director David Yates for the role. Depp was asked by Warner Bros to withdraw from the role after he lost a legal battle he waged against a British tabloid for libeling him in describing him as a “wife-beater.” Depp reportedly was asked to leave after shooting one day on the film
The upcoming third Fantastic Beasts film will be directed by David Yates from a screenplay by J. K. Rowling and Steve Kloves. A joint American and British production, it is the sequel to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. It is the third installment in the Fantastic Beasts film series and the eleventh overall in the Wizarding World franchise. The film stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, Jessica Williams, and Jude Law. It is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on 15 July 2022.
