‘Stargirl’: Season 3 in Early Development at DC

Conversations regarding a third season of Stargirl are currently underway, as our friends over at Stargirl.TV have learned!

Discussions are currently happening regarding a potential third season of DC’s Stargirl, with Stargirl.TV stating that “all indications are looking like a season 3 is a go.”  DC’s Stargirl, or simply Stargirl, is a superhero television series created by Geoff Johns that premiered on DC Universe. It is based on the DC Comics superhero Courtney Whitmore created by Johns and Lee Moder. The series follows high school student Courtney Whitmore, portrayed by Brec Bassinger, who discovers the cosmic staff and becomes the inspiration for a new generation of superheroes who become the Justice Society of America.

Stargirl premiered its first season on May 18, 2020, which consists of 13 episodes. The series also aired the following day on the broadcast network The CW and was made available on The CW’s digital platforms. In July 2020, the series was renewed for a second season by The CW, resulting in Stargirl moving to the network as a CW original series.  It is currently unclear if Stargirl season 3 will also be distributed by the CW, especially with AT&T working towards having most of their DC library on the HBO Max streaming service. Back in November of 2020, DC Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee revealed that, excluding Swamp Thing, Stargirl and DC Daily, DC Universe’s entire original content library would be moving to HBO Max.

Furthermore, season 3 of Stargirl will be introducing comics character Bruce Gordon. In the comics, Bruce Gordon is supervillain Eclipso’s first modern host. Bruce Gordon is a scientist specializing in solar energy. While in the jungle to view a solar eclipse, Gordon was attacked by a tribal sorcerer named Mophir. Before plunging to his death off a cliff, Mophir wounded Gordon with a black diamond. Afterwards, Gordon transformed into the villainous Eclipso whenever an eclipse occurred. A blue-gray or purple circle covered the rightmost two-thirds of his face, resembling a partial eclipse. Gordon experienced many Jekyll-and-Hyde transformations and misadventures in House of Secrets. Eclipso will appear as a regular in the second season of the The CW television show Stargirl after showing the character trapped in a gem in the season one finale. He will be played by Nick Tarabay, who also played Digger Harkness in CW’s Arrow.

Stargirl season 2 is currently in production, with filming having begun on October 28, 2020. The second season is currently set to air sometime in 2021.
