‘The Last of Us’ at HBO Set To Start Production on July 5, 2021

Production on the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us will begin on the 5th of July, 2021.

The Last of Us is an action-adventure franchise developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. In the first game, players control Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across a post-apocalyptic United States. The Last of Us Part II is set five years after The Last of Us, with the player controlling two characters whose lives intertwine: Ellie, who sets out for revenge after suffering a tragedy, and Abby, a soldier who becomes involved in a conflict with a cult.

HBO’s The Last of Us will be starting production on the 5th of July in Calgary, Alberta. The Canadian production has a working title of “Bear and Pear.” Production is set to wrap up on the 8th of June, 2022.

In March 2020, a television adaptation of the first game was announced in the planning stages at HBO, expected to cover events of the game and possibly some parts of its sequel. Later that year in November, it was announced that HBO gave The Last of Us a series order.

The cast consists of The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal as Joel and Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Craig Mazin, Johan Renck, Neil Druckmann, Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan are executive producing, with Mazin and Druckmann set to write the series. Director Kantemir Balagov will be directing the pilot episode.

It was later announced by Druckmann on Twitter that The Last of Us game composer Gustavo Santaolalla will be returning to compose the score of the television series. The Last of Us is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television. PlayStation Productions, Word Games, and Naughty Dog.

The Last of Us will be available to watch on HBO and HBO Max.
