Jay Lycurgo Set To Play Tim Drake In ‘Titans’ Season 3 at HBO Max

Jay Lycurgo is set to play Tim Drake in the upcoming third season of HBO Max’s Titans.

Jay Lycurgo is an actor who has starred in projects such as Listen, Doctors, and HBO’s I May Destroy You. He is also known for his small appearance in the trailer of The Batman, where he was praised for his non-verbal acting skills.  Fortunately for Lycurgo, this won’t be the only live-action DC property he will be starring in, as it has been revealed that he will be playing Tim Drake in season 3 of DC’s Titans.

Back in May of 2020, a casting call was discovered by The Illuminerdi which reveals that Warner Bros was in search of a South-East Asian actor aged 18 or older, to play a 16-17 year old named Daniel. The Illuminerdi theorized that Daniel was supposed to be Danny Chase, a character from the comics. Danny Chase (later called Phantasm) was a short-lived member of the New Teen Titans. He was raised by parents who were international spies. As a result, he was extensively trained in espionage, infiltration, and intelligence acquisition. In addition, he was a metahuman with powerful telekinetic abilities and a near-photographic memory.

I revealed in August that “Daniel” is none other than Tim Drake, the third character to assume the role of Batman’s vigilante partner Robin. As a young boy, Tim was in the audience the night Dick Grayson’s parents were murdered and later managed to discover the identities of Batman and the original Robin through their exploits. After the death of the second Robin, Jason Todd, and witnessing Batman spiral into darkness, Tim attempted to convince the first robin Dick Grayson to resume the role of Robin stating that “Batman needs a robin”. However, Dick did not take back the role of Robin, and instead, Tim was appointed to become the third Robin. The Titans version of the character has been described as “a youth who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks but never lost his belief in heroism. His laid-back persona is balanced by a near-genius intellect. He has innate detective skills with a perception of detail that is way beyond his years. Despite his rough upbringing, he’s motivated by the opportunity to do good in the world instead of dwelling on the pain and tragedy.”

As stated earlier, the production was originally looking for a South-East Asian actor to cast as Tim Drake in Titans season 3. This was changed back in October when I revealed that Titans was looking for African-American actors to portray the role of Tim Drake. I heard that a specific inspiration for this decision has been the Black Lives Matter movement, which has found new momentum since Titans has been on hiatus. While Warner Bros was specifically searching for African-American actors for the role, I specified that they are still willing to cast any actor from any background.  Following that report, I learned on the first of December that an actor had finally been cast in the role of Tim Drake, though I was not told who. What I did learn was that the actor comes from a biracial background.

We didn’t hear anything else about the character until today, when fans seemingly discovered that Jay Lycurgo will be playing Tim Drake. It started with an Instagram post from actor Jay Lycurgo. The post reveals that Lycurgo is currently in Toronto, with a caption that states: “drake’s house.” Lycurgo later edited the post and changed the caption to an emote of a house. You can view the Instagram post below:

Meanwhile, fans discovered that Lycurgo had liked two Titans related tweets on Twitter. The first tweet was actually a tweet of mine, where I theorized based on set pictures that the production might finally be filming scenes with the character of Tim Drake. The other tweet was from the official Titans Twitter account, which confirmed that we will be getting more casting announcements soon.

Additionally, cast members have also confirmed this casting. Not only are Red Hood actor Curran Walters and Beast Boy actor Ryan Potter both following Lycurgo’s Instagram account, but Potter also talked about this on Twitter. Unfortunately, he has since deleted the tweet. You can still view it below:

Not only will Tim Drake be joining the third season of Titans, but a Teen Titans spin-off series might also be in development at HBO Max. If fans react well to Tim Drake in Titans season 3, he will get to lead a new team of younger Titans in his own spin-off series. Other spin-off projects that are currently in development include a Red Hood spin-off series.

Titans hails from showrunner Greg Walker and producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, and Greg Berlanti. The current cast consists of Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Curran Walters, Conor Leslie, Minka Kelly, Alan Ritchson, and Joshua Orpin. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season. Production on Titans season 3 began on October 14, 2020, in Toronto and will wrap up next June. No premiere date has been set yet, though the season is expected to premiere in July.

Seasons 1 and 2 are now available to be watched on HBO Max in the United States and Netflix internationally.
