DC’s ‘Zatanna’ Film in the Works at Warner Bros. by Emerald Fennell

Per Variety, Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell is set to write the upcoming Zatanna film adaptation. The Zatanna film is set to release theatrically and is being produced by Warner Bros’ DC Films and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions.

Intelligent, confident, self-assured and able to manipulate reality itself with her vast magical abilities, Zatanna balances her time as a skilled stage illusionist with battling the dark arts alongside some of the world’s greatest super heroes. By reciting spells backwards, she can invoke anything her imagination wills, and her inventiveness often allows her to find creative solutions to even the trickiest of problems.

This news comes after our exclusive report regarding a live-action Constantine series being in development at HBO Max, which was recently officially confirmed. It is worth noting that the Constantine series is being produced for HBO Max as a streaming production, while the Zatanna film is set for a theatrical release.

Bad Robot Productions has been responsible for television series such as Lost and Westworld, alongside having produced film franchises like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Mission Impossible. On September 12, 2019, Bad Robot officially announced a new five-year overall deal with WarnerMedia. According to The Hollywood Reporter, WarnerMedia agreed to pay Bad Robot at least $250 million (plus various financial incentives) to produce feature films, television shows, video games, and digital content.

Emerald Fennell is an English director, actress, and author. Her most notable work is as showrunner of BBC America’s Killing Eve series, and as director on Promising Young Woman. She is the first British woman to be nominated by the Academy for directing.
