What Does This Mean?
This means that, unlike what was previously thought, Peacemaker will not be a one-and-done miniseries. Keep in mind that this does not necessarily mean that future seasons have already been greenlit, though it is likely that the Peacemaker writer’s room has written season 1 with future seasons in mind, and that a potential second season is already being written. It wouldn’t be surprising if a second (and possibly a third) season has already been ordered.
Back in September of this year, it was announced that HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order of eight episodes for the first season of the Peacemaker series. Nothing about potential future seasons was mentioned in the original announcement.
How Does The Peacemaker Series Tie Into James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ Film?
Rumors and theories have indicated that John Cena’s Peacemaker character is most likely going to die in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad film. Due to this, fans believed that the Peacemaker series was only going to have one season. I have now heard that this is not the case, and multiple seasons of Peacemaker are planned. It is currently still unclear when exactly the series takes place in the DCEU timeline, or if Peacemaker will die or not.
When replying to a fan on Twitter, James Gunn stated that they are keeping the timeline of the Peacemaker series under wraps until after The Suicide Squad film is released:

What Could We See in Peacemaker Season 2?
In the comics, there are two different characters who took up the mantle of Peacemaker. The first one is Christopher Smith, a pacifist diplomat so committed to peace that he was willing to use force as a superhero to advance the cause. He uses an array of special non-lethal weapons, and also founds the Pax Institute. Most of the villains he goes up against are dictators and warlords. The Smith version of the character is who we will see in The Suicide Squad film and the Peacemaker HBO Max series. The second Peacemaker is Mitchell Black, a surgeon, who was recruited by the “Peacemaker Project.” Black would reappear in the miniseries titled The L.A.W., reunited with the other heroes acquired from Charlton. As a team, they investigated a powerful being targeting military facilities. He appeared to have been killed by the supervillain Prometheus in Infinite Crisis #7 during a battle to save Metropolis from destruction. It’s possible Mitchell Black could pop up in the second season of the series. Black could just be a side-character, but it is also possible that, if Peacemaker season 2 takes place after The Suicide Squad, Black will replace Smith as Peacemaker in the series.
After Mitchell’s demise in the comics, the next time we see a Peacemaker is in the pre-Flashpoint Blue Beetle comics centered around Jaime Reyes. Around a year or so before Christopher Smith met Blue Beetle, he found himself in a Bialyan pyramid that happened to be the same one Dan Garrett found the Blue Beetle scarab in years before. While inside, he accidentally came into contact with alien technology that allowed him to receive the scarab’s database in his mind. Sensing the connection, he sought out Jaime, initially to see if the boy would become a threat but eventually becoming a reluctant partner.
Jaime Reyes appearing as Blue Beetle in a future season of Peacemaker is a possibility, though it is far more likely that the character is being reserved for a solo series or film. The Wrap revealed back in December of 2018 that a Blue Beetle feature film was in the works. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer was set to write the screenplay, with Zev Foreman set to executive produce. Unfortunately, we have not heard anything about this project since the initial announcement. I learned back in October of 2019 that a Blue Beetle live-action series was in the works at HBO Max. Insider Daniel Richtman and Production Weekly both confirmed this information in January of 2020, though we also have not heard about this project since.
What Do We Know About Peacemaker?
HBO Max is set to explore the origins of the Peacemaker character, the master of weapons from the upcoming The Suicide Squad film, in the new Max Original action-adventure-comedy series Peacemaker. HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order of eight episodes for the first season of the show.
Brooks is set to play Leota Adebayo in the series, along with Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith, Jennifer Holland, who will reprise her role of Emilia Harcourt from The Suicide Squad film, and Chris Conrad as Vigilante/Adrian Chase. Chukwudi Iwuji is set to play Clemson Murn, with Lochlyn Munro as Larry Fitzgibbon, Annie Chang as Detective Sophie Song, Christopher Heyerdahl as Captain Locke, and Steve Agee as John Economos.
James Gunn about the series:
Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.
While details about Peacemaker are being kept under wraps, the series will explore the origins of the character that Cena will play in the upcoming film, a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. The series will extend the world that Gunn is creating for The Suicide Squad movie, which is scheduled to be released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on August 6, 2021.
I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.
James Gunn is set to write the series and direct the first two episodes, with Gunn, Matt Miller, and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran serving as executive producers of the series and Cena as co-executive producer. Peacemaker is scheduled to begin production in early 2021, prior to Gunn beginning work on the next Guardians of the Galaxy film.
