Exclusive: ‘Star Trek: Short Treks’ Feature Films in the Works at CBS All Access

It looks like CBS is planning to expand on the Short Treks format, by making feature-length episodes.

Star Trek: Short Treks is an anthology web series created for CBS All Access by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. It originated as a spin-off companion series from Star Trek: Discovery, and consists of several shorts that use settings and characters from that series and the wider Star Trek universe. The shorts are around 10 to 20 minutes long. Each episode of Star Trek: Short Treks tells a stand-alone story that serves as an “opportunity for deeper storytelling and exploration of key characters and themes that fit into Star Trek: Discovery and the expanding Star Trek universe.”

Back at The GWW, I published an exclusive about there being a feature film in the works starring the Star Trek: Discovery cast. This was one of my more unbelievable scoops, but it actually was confirmed by Chris Pine very recently. Appearing on the podcast Things Are Going Great For Me, this is what Pine had to say about the matter:

Tarantino is going to do one. And then, who is it? Noah Hawley was going to do something else, and then that fell through. And then he’s going to  do something with the Discovery, the new Alex Kurtzman-led cast.

This is one of my first Star Trek scoops that have officially been confirmed and I love that. That’s not all though. Right after that interview came out, I heard from a source that Paramount had ordered a Star Trek movie from the Discovery crew. I think that’s big news, seeing as how before this, Paramount-Trek and CBS-Trek have always stayed separate. A week or so later I got an update from the same source about this. Apparently, it’s not actually a movie. It’s several.

ViacomCBS is working on expanding the “Short Treks” branding to now also include feature films, and I think the Discovery movie scoop I wrote about at The GWW might be the first of those movies. It makes sense– Short Treks generally focus on CBS All Access Star Trek shows and most episodes are about Star Trek: Discovery. The Discovery movie is also, well, a movie, and so are these new Short Treks movies that this article is about.

Set 10 years before Captain Kirk’s five-year mission, Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms. One Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. Seasons 1 and 2 are now available to stream on CBS All Access, with season 3 releasing on the 16th of October. The series is produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

It is currently unclear if these Short Treks films (I guess we should call them Long Treks now?) will also have theatrical runs like normal movies, but I think they might. From what I understand, the Discovery movie I learned about months ago was set to have a short theatrical run so it’s likely all these Short Treks movies will have short theatrical runs. They will all also, of course, be available on CBS All Access upon release.
