‘Titans’ Searching For African-American Actors To Play Tim Drake in Season 3

Titans is looking into casting an African-American actor in the role of Tim Drake.

Back in August, I revealed that Tim Drake would be joining the third season of Titans. Since then, we have heard very little about the character. Luckily, I’ve been able to gather some more information about the character.

A casting call discovered by The Illuminerdi reveals that Warner Bros was originally eyeing South-East Asian actors aged 18 or older, to play the 16-17 year Robin. The character has been described as a youth who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks but never lost his belief in heroism. His laid-back persona is balanced by a near-genius intellect. He has innate detective skills with a perception of detail that is way beyond his years. Despite his rough upbringing, he’s motivated by the opportunity to do good in the world instead of dwelling in the pain and tragedy.

Based on what I have learned, this might not be the case anymore. From what I understand, the production is now looking for African-American actors to portray the role. I’ve heard that a specific inspiration for this decision has been the Black Lives Matter movement, which has found new momentum since Titans has been in hiatus. While Warner Bros is specifically searching for African-American actors for the role, they are still willing to cast any actor from any ethnicity and race. Titans has generally been flexible when it comes to race and ethnicity requirements. Character backgrounds have been adjusted in the past, as they cast actors based on which actor boasts the most acting skill and which audition fits the role the best.

Titans Season 3 is currently set to feature Tim Drake speaking lines in Mandarin, though these lines will be changed to an African language if the production manages to cast an African-American actor in the role. Tim’s parents are also set to appear in the season. Titans is planning to cast an African-American male and an Asian-American female in these roles.

Tim Drake is a superhero appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Marv Wolfman and Pat Broderick, he first appeared in Batman #436 (August 1989) as the third character to assume the role of Batman’s vigilante partner Robin. As a young boy, Tim was in the audience the night Dick Grayson’s parents were murdered and later managed to discover the identities of Batman and the original Robin through their exploits. After the death of the second Robin, Jason Todd, and witnessing Batman spiral into darkness, Tim was convinced that he should train to become the third Robin.

The Teen Titans spin-off series that I scooped months ago is still in development at HBO Max. If fans react well to Tim Drake in Titans season 3, he will get to lead a new team of younger Titans in his own spin-off series. Other spin-off projects that are currently in development include: a Red Hood series and an anthology series set between seasons of Titans.

Titans hails from showrunner Greg Walker, and producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, and Greg Berlanti. The current cast consists of Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Curran Walters, Conor Leslie, Minka Kelly, Alan Ritchson, Chelsea Zhang, and Joshua Orpin. Season 3 began production last Wednesday in Toronto, and will wrap up next June. No premiere date has been set.

Seasons 1 and 2 will be available to watch on HBO Max on November 1st, 2020.
