Exclusive: New Details About ‘Titans’ Season 3

On the 22nd of August, a big DC-centered event was held by DC Comics called DC FanDome. Titans was present at DC FanDome, with a panel where it was revealed that Barbara Gordon, Scarecrow, and Red Hood would all be featured in Titans Season 3. As many other news publications did, EntertainmentWeekly published an article covering the Titans news. It looks like the EW article contains more info than what was shown at FanDome, though.

My guess is that a press release went out to a select few news sites, containing everything that was going to be announced at the Titans panel. Then it was announced that FanDome was being split into two separate events. Titans has a panel at both events, but the August panel is a shortened version of the September panel. The press release EW got was from the original Titans panel, the one from before FanDome was split in two.

The EntertainmentWeekly article states the following:

  •  Jason Todd (Curran Walters), the current Robin, will become the Red Hood in season 3. Jason will adopt the alias because he becomes obsessed with taking down his old team after falling out with them at the end of season 2.
  • Season 3 will also see the titular team relocate from San Francisco to Gotham City.
  • Barbara Gordon will be joining the series. When we meet Barbara in season 3, the former Batgirl will be serving as the commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department (like father, like daughter). Although she has a past relationship with Dick Grayson, she is wary of the Titans now being in Gotham.
  • Scarecrow will also be seen in season 3. The fear-toxin-loving Scarecrow, a.k.a. Dr. Jonathan Crane, is an inmate at Arkham Asylum but moonlights as a profiler for the GCPD.

After reading the article and realizing it talks about things that have not been revealed yet, I decided to contact a few sources about these new details. This is what I could find out:

This season was originally supposed to focus very little on Gotham, but this changed due to the coronavirus. COVID-19 pushed back production to Fall/Winter, which means it is hard to film a lot of scenes during the daytime without any rain or snow. Seeing as how Gotham is basically always supposed to be dark and cold, it was decided to focus more on Gotham than San Francisco. As you most likely already have realized, the aesthetic of San Francisco is going to be harder to replicate in the winter compared to the dark and rainy Gotham.

Red Hood will be the main villain of the first half of the season, with Blackfire being the main antagonist of the entire season and especially the second half. This is done similarly to how season 1 was written, with Blackfire having Trigon’s role (though Blackfire appears more in her season than Trigon did in season 1).

Scarecrow is very different from past versions of the character. I have been told that this version is, specifically, very different from Christopher Nolan’s Scarecrow, portrayed by Cillian Murphy. It has been suggested that the Titans version of the character is supposed to give off a Hannibal Lecter vibe. A Red Hood suit has been made, though Scarecrow does not have a suit yet. This makes sense, as he is supposed to be in GCPD custody as revealed by EntertainmentWeekly. Scarecrow has not been cast yet.
